You’ll Need A Green Top Hat!

Sometime back in the 1990s, I used to travel between Ireland and Cuba. These were days before all decent people hated Russia, and one of the cheapest flights was the “Aeroflot stopover.”

This was between South America (usually Lima or Santiago de Chile) and Moscow, stopping to refuel in Havana and Shannon. If there were seats available, you could buy a ticket for just the middle part.

One day, I booked this flight without thinking of the date. We took off from Havana on 16th March, arriving at Shannon on 17th. It was oddly quiet for Shannon airport. I thought it was because it was early, then I noticed green things and worked it out — St Patrick’s Day is 17th March.
