A Year at Glance 2023

Last year, on December 21st, the winter solstice, a significant day known as Shab-e-Yalda in Iranian culture, we reflected on its symbolism. This longest night and shortest day carry a profound meaning for me. Observing these traditions, even when far from family and homeland, is more than a ritual; it’s an opportunity to contemplate the year’s challenges and moments of illumination. In the words of Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet, “You must have shadow and light source both.”

In our work, we continually navigate the balance between light and darkness. While intentionally addressing forced displacement, we confront the most extreme forms of darkness, including loss, suffering, and violence, leading to trauma that lingers in the mind, body, and heart for years.
