The Importance of Giving

Throughout the Quran God mentions the act of giving money to people in need, to help vulnerable members of society. From the Quran’s perspective, charity is an act of worship. It purifies a person and their wealth, atones for their sins, aids in demonstrating their religious truthfulness to God and increases manifold as rewards obtained in the Hereafter.

There are several words associated with giving in the Quran – sadaqah (صَدَقَة), zakat (الزَّكَاة), anfag (أنفق) and ya’ti (‎يعطي). (The last word we will not explore extensively).

Sadaqah is the voluntary act of giving and it is not state obligated. Zakat on the other hand is obligatory and may be instated as a state tax. Zakat is a portion of their wealth Muslims must give in order to purify their income. Then there is ‘spending’ (أنفق) one’s wealth – usually contextualised in verses that mention ‘the cause of God’ – to affirm one’s faith.
