The One Minute Geographer: Canada’s Population Distribution
<p>In the last post we suggested that Canada might be thought of as a ‘shoestring country.’ Let’s look at a few basics about Canada’s population.</p>
<p>Canada has 38.2 million people, almost the same as California, the most populous state in the US (with 39.5 million.) A European comparison is that Canada has about as many people as Poland.</p>
<p>While a quick look at the population density map above shows Canada’s population spread out along the US border, it’s actually fairly concentrated. Consider that Canada has three heavily populated provinces each home to one of the nation’s three largest metropolitan areas. In each province the big metro area is home to about half (44% to 52%) of the provincial population. See chart.</p>
