I Hate God of the Gaps Theology

In other words, there’s a 1 in 10⁴⁰⁰⁰⁰ probability that life could have arisen spontaneously on Planet Earth. This is a lower probability than winning Powerball for 52 consecutive weeks. Who could believe in anything that improbable?

There are reasons why I would question that number but; let’s put that aside.

We do not know, may never know, exactly how life started on this planet. So there is a gap in our understanding. For what it’s worth. I suspect that the probability of life emerging, even under ideal conditions, is very small. I’m in good scientific company there. Atheist and celebrity physicist Brian Cox also thinks the probability of life emerging spontaneously is low.
