Freezing Marrickville: A Renter’s Lost Dream
<p>Property is an obsession for many Sydney residents, and resident-hopefuls. People read property listings like gamblers read the race guide. And with Sydney currently waist deep in a housing affordability crisis, there is plenty to obsess about.</p>
<p>As a long-term renter, I am feeling the squeeze like I’ve never felt before. The <a href="https://indaily.com.au/news/2023/07/27/biggest-rent-hike-since-1988/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">rental market</a> has not been hit this hard and this quickly since 1988, thirty-five years ago. No longer are renters competing for apartments with water views or houses with art deco design, but are now competing for rooms in share-houses and <a href="https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/article/living-in-a-basement-with-no-windows-life-in-a-12-person-share-house-during-australias-rental-crisis/lars2zusb" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">bunk beds</a>. The stories of <a href="https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/politics/homelessness-up-by-23-per-cent-in-sydney-since-last-year/news-story/f59f3a26dc172567ecca57384f66aa4b" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">people becoming homeless</a> is popping up regularly on news feeds. It is a dreary time.</p>
