Foreign Talent in Taiwan: The Rough with the Smooth

<p>The topic of working in Taiwan as a foreigner is something I&rsquo;ve spoken about on multiple occasions. I&rsquo;ve had the pleasure of speaking at events discussing this issue hosted by All Hands Taiwan, The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, TAITRA and at a couple of job fairs. Within the foreigner community in Taiwan, this is the pervasive question: what are my options here professionally? I chose the sub-title of my article, not to suggest foreigners here are&nbsp;<em>rough</em>, but to allude to the difficult truth about living here as a foreigner: life in Taiwan is fantastic but the job prospects are not great. You have to accept the&nbsp;<em>rough&nbsp;</em>with the&nbsp;<em>smooth</em>.</p> <p><strong>What do the statistics say?</strong></p> <p>At the end of 2019 there were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.immigration.gov.tw/5475/5478/141478/141380/209124/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">785,341 foreigners living in Taiwan</a>, 363,323 males and 423,018 females. Around 92% are from South East Asia and around 14,000 are from the larger English-speaking countries.
