Fear of Success | The Idea of Success Terrified Me For Decades

Something interesting came up this week. Someone presented an opportunity for me to reenter my career and go into management. I have years of experience and worked as a trainer, mentor, and supervisor. I have received rave reviews on my training performance and mentorship. I am confident I could easily transition into a leadership role.

But as soon as I heard it was a management position, I became nervous. With this nervousness, I realized I needed to step back to understand my emotions. In the past, I would silently freak out if I had to take control or lead in any way. This feeling of anxiousness was not unfamiliar.

After sitting with myself for a while, I realized I feared leadership, success, and drastic change. Leadership is too much responsibility. All eyes are on you, you are criticized, and there are too many expectations. What if I fail? What if I’m not good enough? What if I’m overworked and undervalued?

After a while, I asked myself, “What if you are good enough? What if you are the best manager to ever walk through those doors? What if you succeed?” How will we ever know unless we try? Some of us will never achieve the success we claim to want because we are running from it.

Ask yourself, “Are you afraid of success?” If so, why are you afraid? Why don’t you think you’re good enough? Why are you unworthy of leading a successful team? Who said you couldn’t? What’s holding you back?
