I didn’t think that mice were good at climbing… until I rented a flat in Edinburgh!

If you’ve ever visited Edinburgh you’ll have noticed that much of the city is comprised of stone tenement flats. These ‘apartment blocks’ are usually 3 or 4 storeys high, often with a row of shops on the ground floor. Many date back to the 19th century, and most of them have rows and rows of chimneys on their terraced rooftops.

I’ve lived in several of these tenement flats, and visited many more. They are popular with students and young couples alike.

Being built of solid stone, with wood and plaster walls, there are gaps a-plenty. There are cracks around the skirting boards, in the backs of cupboards, around the old boarded up fireplaces (Edinburgh’s nickname of Auld Reekie comes from the smog emanating from the densely packed flats with a coal fire in each room!).
