You’re doing respectful and constructive feedback all wrong!

Time and time again the topic of how to offer useful feedback comes up. I had previously written about how one might solicit such feedback, but today I want to write about what it means to be respectful and constructive, as well as provide some tools helping with providing better feedback to others.

#1 What is Respect

Let’s start with what the term means. Oxford disctionary defines it chiefly as “a feeling of admiration for someone or something because of their good qualities or achievements” and then also as “polite behavior toward or care for someone or something that you think is important”.

This second statement is really quite telling: “polite” behavior. What does it mean to be polite then? Oxford disctionary tells us “having or showing good manners and respect for the feelings of others” as well as “socially correct but not always sincere”.

This tells us that being respectful is different from simply speaking your mind, instead we should take the effects of what we say into account so as not to hurt the feelings of those who would hear it.

“socially correct but not always sincere” is also a great hint in that it points out that we must keep standards in mind, since we cannot always know the specific feelings of another person.
