Expressing Uncertainty Without Confusing the Fact Finders
<p>As observed in our last installment of this series, “<a href="https://medium.com/forensic-horizons/can-certainty-in-digital-forensics-be-automated-4f64ba22555d" rel="noopener">Can Certainty in Digital Forensics Be Automated?</a>”, it’ll probably be awhile yet before digital forensics tools can demonstrate the certainty of their results through, say, a likelihood ratio.</p>
<p>So how are digital forensic practitioners addressing confidence in their results? Again, quality management practices such as tool testing can mitigate challenges with putting guidelines and SOPs into practice.</p>
<p>But that’s only one part of the confidence equation. Digital forensic practitioners also need to be able to communicate their results in a way that judges and juries can easily understand.</p>
