My First ‘Proper’ Hike Was a Real Eye-Opener

I’ve never been on what I’d consider a ‘proper’ hike before. I’ve been on plenty of walks — some of them long — but they’ve always been on pretty flat, uncomplicated paths. And when my wife and I set off on our first full day exploring California’s magnificent Yosemite National Park, just a week into our honeymoon, the plan was not to deviate from that modus operandi. We love walking, after all, and know where we stand with it. Following my own sunrise jog (an incredible experience in its own right, and almost certainly worth its own piece) and a filling breakfast, we packed a few bottles of water and some cereal bars and left the comfort of the lodge.
