An Eye for an Eye

<p>The same applies to various aspects of civil law, but for the sake of this essay, let&#39;s stick to criminal law. Deterrence, rehabilitation, and incapacitation all allegedly serve that purpose &mdash; community protection and recognition. Yet it seems our dehumanizing penal system more often than not creates hardened criminals. Our penal system, partially due to the failures of capitalism and its elevation of individualism over community, begets more crime and too often creates a permanent criminal class and thus does not protect society. I&rsquo;ll put all that aside for this essay.
