Erased Lessons: The Hidden Cost of Excluding LGBTQ+ Topics from Education
<p>Think back to the days when opting out of sex education classes was a norm. Remember the signed forms, the parental notes excusing us from the class? It was a brief period, a week or two at most.</p>
<p>Those who didn’t consent received a package of all the material, a chance to change their minds. The excluded kids? They were engaged in other activities. I’ve seen all sorts of excuses, some seeking exemption from music class as a whole, or the entire evolution unit in science, to opposing anything that does not support traditional ideals. Now, as the debate over LGBTQ+ education in schools rages on, I find myself immersed in reflections of those days. Why can’t it be that simple now?</p>
