She was born on October 31, 1896, in Chester, Pennsylvania. Waters began her career in the 1920s as a singer and gained popularity with her distinctive voice and emotional delivery.</p>
<p>In addition to her successful music career, Ethel Waters became one of the first African American women to integrate Broadway and was a pioneering figure in the entertainment industry. She appeared in various Broadway productions, including the musical “Africana” in 1927. Waters also had a successful film career, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1949 film “Pinky.”</p>
