<p>You’ve probably heard of Japan’s shrinking population and it’s long stagnated economy. All across the country, its cities shrink as communities age, which in turn results in a less vibrant economy and community. One by one, stores are closing their shutters permanently. Once vibrant markets have become desolate of activity. This is happening all across every town and city in Japan: everywhere except Tokyo.</p>
<p>While the population everywhere else in the country has been shrinking, the population of Tokyo has largely been steady in the last couple of years. According to the Japan Institute for International Affairs, Tokyo’s population grew by 3.6% between 2010 and 2020, while the total population of Japan decreased by 0.5%. This data suggests that in the past decade, there has been a mass internal migration of people from all over the country to major cities like Tokyo.</p>
