Equinox DC Superhero’s Surprising Origin Story
<p>I love a good character backstory — something that sets up a reason for the character’s actions and responses to conflict. Especially if it’s about superheroes. So, when I was doing research for an article to write about Indigenous Peoples of Canada, I was intrigued to find out that a superhero from the DC universe has roots here in Canada.</p>
<p><em>Equinox</em> is known as Miiyahbin “Mii” Marten, a sixteen-year-old First Nations superhero. She appeared in a five-issue story in the Justice League Canada comic book series as a member of<em> </em><a href="https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Justice_League_United" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"><em>Justice League United</em></a>. She’s an Indigenous Peoples of Canada <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cree" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Cree</a> from Moose Factory Island in <a href="https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Ontario" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Ontario</a>, <a href="https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Canada" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Canada</a>, and has elemental powers. <em>Equinox</em> was created by <a href="https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Jeff_Lemire" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Jeff Lemire</a> and <a href="https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Mike_McKone" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Mike McKone</a> and first appeared in <em>Justice League United </em>in<em> </em>2014.</p>
