When Enough Is Enough

I have a chronic pain condition called ankylosing spondylitis. It took years to get diagnosed. Apparently, it’s going to take even longer to get even doctors to believe the pain portion, even though it has been medically proven that it’s a legitimate condition and that I do actually have it. I have to convince the general public, work, family of my condition — it’s a constant battle just to be acknowledged as not a liar, just for hurting.

Now, to get out of pain is a completely different story. I have tried anti-inflammatories, a biologic, injections, and brief bursts of opioids. Guess what they don’t want to give me that is the only thing left TO give me… Ding, ding. Opioids. The Candyman/Voldemort of the medical field for patients. Mention that, and out come the red flags. For crying out loud, not every patient seeking pain management is or will be an addict, and it’s grossly unfair to make a person in pain feel worse. It’s in our treatment verbiage: a negative attitude exacerbates pain.
