Enchanting Istanbul, Part 2 of 2
<p>The rain followed through on its promise, but it didn’t impede my getting on my way for the day. When I entered the hotel lobby, Ramazan took his umbrella and handed it to me, insisting that I may need it.</p>
<p>My first stop was the Suleymaniye Mosque, which was designed by Mimar Sinan, considered to be Turkey’s greatest architect.</p>
<p>Turkish founding President Atatürk eliminated the use of Arabic script, and replaced it with modified Roman letters. There are umlauts and cedillas sometimes used, which make changes to the way certain letters are pronounced.</p>
<p>The spelling is simplified and phonetic. Here is a sampling of some of the English words that have been incorporated into Turkish, as well as their local spellings:</p>
