Elephant Toothpaste in a Test Tube

The other day I was meditating and remembered that I had this large, black, perfectly-good canister of factory grade 30% hydrogen peroxide that was just lying around precariously; and realized that I should probably put it to some use.

My plan was simple. Some might even say, elegant (and definitely not dashed off). I would use some yeast (as a source for catalase) to catalytically decompose my hydrogen peroxide in a test tube containing soapy water. I hoped that the reaction would produce oxygen gas fast enough for bubbles to spurt out of the test tube, and that it’d look cool enough for all the cleaning up that would follow. Look up Elephant Toothpaste if you want to see where I got the idea from.

For anyone interested, the reaction goes:

Learn More
