Why do Jews not eat pork?

Ifyou ask me why you shouldn’t eat pigs, I’d say it’s ’cuz they’re so darn cute. But what does God have against them? Twice in the law of the Old Testament we read that pigs “unclean,” and eating them is forbidden. It’s been a great theme in religious life for millennia, and a puzzle.

Pigs are an enormously efficient source of food, reproducing with amazing speed. Here in America, just in 2017, we butchered 121 million of them. But for Jews, and Muslims too, pork can be a big “no.”

With no reason for the ban given in the Bible, the effort to decipher its origins is a fascinating case study in how God has been understood.
