Why 50% of All British People Will Eat Pancakes next Tuesday

The Origins of Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday falls 47 days before Easter Sunday each year, and just before the beginning of Lent. During Lent, some observant Christians fast for 40 days (excluding Sundays) from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday, so Shrove Tuesday was the last day to pig out.

Similar to Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”) in some other countries, it was also the last opportunity to use up perishable items, such as butter, eggs and milk. And so the tradition of making pancakes was born, in the 16th century.
