Our book club selection this month: The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

The story is told from several points of view, woven together by different voices. We get to know Chona, whose constant giving and kindness keep the town united. Chona’s husband, Moshe, oversees the Chicken Hill Theater, which he bravely integrates against strong opposition. We are able to observe their day-to-day struggles, victories, and resiliency of Chicken Hill people in the face of discrimination.

However, the narrative is more than just understanding the lives of Chona and Moshe. It explores the depths of the shadows underneath the surface. The tenuous peace is upset when a skeleton found in a well sets off an investigation into Chicken Hill’s past that uncovers a violent and unfair past. It comes out that Gabriel, a Black man who disappeared decades ago, is the owner of the skeleton. Deciphering his tale entails a search for the truth and responsibility, drawing us into the town’s complex web of racial tensions.
