Dublin Characters: The Story Of The Irish Zozimus, Blind Bard Of The Liberties

Michael Moran was born 1794, in Faddle Alley, near blackpitts in the Liberties of Dublin. Some say Foddle alley got its name from the Poddle river that runs nearby, and whatever the reason for the lane’s name, one thinks of him listening to the sound of running water as an infant.

Moran was left blind after an illness in his childhood. He grew up around ballad singers in Dublin, His ears were highly attuned to the exciting verse that was performed on street corners.

WB Yeats said Moran’s blindness allowed him to interact with the world in a special way: “free from the interruption of sight, his mind became a perfect echoing chamber, where every movement of the day and every change of public passion whispered itself into rhyme or quaint saying”.
