Dopamine plays a dual role in the body, as a hormone and a neurotransmitter. Within the Central Nervous System, Dopamine binds to specific receptors present in Neurons and it has an important part in cognition, memory, emotion, locomotion etc..
Depending on its location and role, it posses distinct functions and signalling. Dopamine as a hormone, it regulates blood pressure, kidney function, sodium levels via travelling through bloodstream. As a neurotransmitter, it is produced in specific areas of the brain such as the substantia nigra and interestingly, has an effect in motivation and reward.
