How to become a (psychedelic) drug researcher

A question that students have asked me fairly often over the years since I’ve been doing drug research is some variation of “How can I become a drug researcher myself?” This is a very nice question to get, in that it’s very gratifying to be in a field that young people aspire to work in, but it’s also one that I’ve struggled to answer, for two reasons.

Firstly because I feel like my own career-path (more of a career-meander really) is a terrible example. My PhD was in cognitive psychology, then I worked on low-level vision for several years, then another post-doc on a pain-related project, and finally I got into drug research largely by happening to be in the right place at the right time with the right skills. So in other words, for me, it was largely dumb luck and taking opportunities that happened to present themselves. Not really a platform that you can build some helpful advice on.
