Drew Barrymore Has Crossed The Line

Like many Gen Xers, I’m a fan of Drew Barrymore. She’s starred in some great sci-fi films including classics like E.T. and Donnie Darko. She’s starred alongside Adam Sandler in comedies The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, showing us she has comedic talents. She was even in a roller derby movie, Whip It, which my partner got to be involved with as she was part of a derby league at the time.

She also seems like a generally lovely person. But today, I don’t like her so much.

This is because I read the news from Deadline that she’s resuming her show, aptly named The Drew Barrymore Show, while Hollywood studios still haven’t given unionized writers a fair deal.

The Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May 2, petitioning for better wages and added protections. (If you want the particulars of what the union is asking for, you can read it here.) The WGA was joined by the Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) on the picket lines in July, bolstering the cause.

Flip-flopping

At the beginning of the strike action, Barrymore seemed to be on the side of the unions. She even decided to turn down hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards in solidarity.

While she’s not legally bound to honour the strike (talk shows don’t fall under the same contract as other televised shows), she is a member of SAG-AFTRA, and the union has said WGA staff would be left behind as the show resumes taping. Those facts alone should be enough for her to hold off.

But as we know, money is a powerful drug.
