A Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe Review

Released by HAL for the Switch in 2023, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe is a remake of the Wii game that I had not played at the time.

I received this as a birthday gift from my son, so I have to love it. And play it co-op with my kids. Fortunately, it’s a good one. It’s not nearly Forgotten Land good, but the co-op, while chaotic, does make for a good time much as I experienced in Superstar in days long gone.

All of the content is what makes this one fun, including 4 playable characters that have varied powers, many mini-games, a new game type after you clear the game, a plethora of masks, and of course the usual variety of powers obtained by swallowing your foes.

The levels are too chaotic for the game’s own good though. It’s easy to get hit and it’s hard to see dangers in time. The health system is gentle as is Kirby’s style, but you do have a limited number of lives and losing those will require you to restart the current level. Playing with little kids, this meant my Waddle Dee companion would fall into a pit repeatedly until the shared lives pool was zero at which point he could not rejoin until the next level and I could not afford to die, lest I had to restart the current level.
