The double-shelled egg
<p>This is a question often asked in the trans community. For those scratching their heads, an “egg” in this context is a trans person who <em>does not yet know that they are trans</em>, and an “egg crack moment” is when the realisation finally dawns that, in fact, you are not the cis man or woman you always assumed you were.</p>
<p>For some trans people the realisation comes completely out of the blue; one day they’re living what they assume is a perfectly normal cis life, thinking what they assume are perfectly normal cis thoughts like “but all people of my gender hate their bodies, right?”, and the next they are questioning everything about themself. This can, understandably, be quite traumatic. For others, the egg crack moment has been presaged by years of signs and doubts and questioning, and the moment of cracking is when it all slides finally, perhaps even reassuringly, into place.</p>
