Life in a post-Dobbs world

During medical school, I had the opportunity to do a rotation at one of the few abortion clinics in Arizona. It was chaotic. My day would start by driving past protestors with graphic signs meant to dissuade women from getting abortions. I heard how sometimes at high volume times, when the clinic had lines that went through the door, these protestors would walk up to the women waiting, and tell them how they were ruining their lives, setting themselves up for being childless, or eternally damned, or both.

If you google a list of abortion providers in Arizona, you can find a list of seven clinics that perform abortion services (compared to California which has 154). The thing is that doesn’t tell you about what types of abortions are performed. Medical abortions, or abortions performed using a pill, can only be done up to the 10th week of pregnancy. Most people discover they are pregnant between weeks 4 and 7, leaving a person as little as three weeks to decide if they want a medical abortion. Most of the abortion providers in Arizona only do medical abortions, with the number of abortion providers being able to perform surgical abortions even smaller.

Website
