The Disunited States of Trump

Over the weekend, a bipartisan group of senators unveiled a plan for curbing illegal immigration. It was the kind of compromise that Congress used to manufacture back in the old days — before Mitch McConnell got Republicans hooked on “crack.”

The crack I refer to is not the pebbly kind put into pipes and then smoked to the user’s unfortunate and inexplicable delight. It’s the high Republicans get from obstructing everything Democratic presidents do to govern the nation. When confronted with a young, very popular Black president, the already-by-then crusty old white Southerner arrogantly warned the world: We will do nothing to help this president, and so by sabotaging his presidency, we guarantee that he will be a one-term president.
