Disney Illusion Island is the Metroidvania I Never Had

Yes, you read the title correctly, but before you start throwing Koopa Shells or ACME anvils at me, let me explain.

I’ve dabbled with some of the other great Metroidvanias of our time, but as much as I loved the idea of sinking my time into these types of games, they just never grabbed me.

Axiom Verge, Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, Steamworld Dig, and Xeodrifter held my attention for short bursts, but I’d always find myself chomping at the bit to play the more high-budget AAA titles.

I do recall Dead Cells getting its hooks into me. If you haven’t played that game, I highly recommend it. But other than that, Metroidvanias have comfortably held their place in the least-played category.

And before you ask, the answer is no. I haven’t played any of the Metroid or Castlevania games.

What can I say? I’m Blasphemous (which is another excellent series in the beloved Metroidvania sub-genre).

Website
