The Super Mario Bros Movie: Disney Should Be Terrified

Nintendo fanboys like myself in general felt cautiously skeptic from the very first moment we heard someone was making a “Mario Movie”. After all and unlike book-readers, most gamers have no idea what a good adaptation of their beloved material looks like. Then the second trailer released and that feeling of skepticism quickly turned into resignation when most of us learned about the casting. The stars seemed to align yet again as they heeded us of ANOTHER incoming cinematic failure.

But then we watched it. And most of us were pleasantly surprised. Despite having many flaws (the lovely Simon Dillon summarizes them here perfectly), this movie made me smile a lot more times than I thought it would. But I don’t want to discuss the film itself. Instead, I want to initiate a conversation around something which astounds me even to this day.

Believe it or not, according to Box Office Mojo, The Super Mario Bros. Movie box office numbers are around 1.2 BILLION whopping dollars.
