Let’s see what happens if I do this

In one form or another, it’s the question that’s determined the course of my life in the past several years. But it’s a difficult question to grapple with, and in one way or another I’ve found ways to avoid the work of actually answering it. For all the hours I’ve spent puzzling over the question in my journal, for all the pages filled and the scraps and notes I carry around with me, for all the momentary flashes of insight, I can never seem to connect those stars into a recognizable constellation. What I seek is a definitive answer, a set of principles that can guide me, unfailingly, in all scenarios and all states of mind. It’s always in my periphery, always just below the threshold of conscious awareness. The harder I think about it, the harder it seems to be to nail down.
