I have never, ever wanted to trade my complex identity for a simpler one, a fairer complexion, though I have often wished others could stop trying to simplify my identity for their own purposes. True, it took me years to love my curly hair, make peace with my wider nose, and accept that my thighs are a force of nature to be reckoned with. As significant as those things are, they were minor in comparison to being able to see, at least a little, into so many different spaces.
