“People Deserve to Die” — Blaming the Victims of Climate Change
<p>I’ve certainly encountered my share of victim blaming since I lost my home in the <a href="https://medium.com/@climatesurvivor/escape-from-paradise-8c8348c9c59f" rel="noopener">2018 Camp Fire</a>.</p>
<p>The first time was within days of the fire, when one of the local news anchors said something to the effect of, “Why would anybody even live in an area with such high fire danger?” It was clear that she didn’t actually mean to blame us for losing our homes, but meant more to question our sanity. Thanks.</p>
<p>And there was, of course, the renowned forest management expert, Donald J. Trump, who wasted no time <a href="https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/11/10/victim-blaming-response-californias-wildfires-trump-ignores-inextricable-link" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">blaming California’s forest management</a> for the fire. He also suggested that we should <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2018/11/18/trump-suggests-californians-can-rake-their-forests-prevent-wildfires-he-is-wrong/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">rake the forest floor</a>. </p>
