I Wake Up Fresh Every Day. Here’s How I Survived The Last 12,994 Days Without Coffee.

I recognise the look. A person will raise their eyebrows at me. They will screw up their face. And then question my every decision. When I say I don’t drink coffee, it’s like I have shattered their perception of the world.

These interactions commonly occur when caffeine addicts seek their first drop of the day.

Before ten in the morning, usually, in a place where it’s socially acceptable to have had three coffees in the space of half an hour. Brunch has to be one of the most problematic meals for someone who doesn’t survive off coffee.

I don’t mean to offend anyone by not choosing coffee. My desire to have a hot chocolate or tea is often taken as disrespect towards the barista. It’s like walking into Disneyland and not riding the rides.

But then come the questions. When coffee reaches the confused person’s hands, they look at me and ask.

How have you survived without drinking coffee?

How do you intend to get through the day without this liquid fuel?

I often catch myself laughing as I’m about to deliver the same rehearsed speech I’ve said many times before.

I don’t need a coffee. I never have.

The heart of it all

My mum tells me I was four years old when I first came to her and complained of something happening in my chest.
