What are the data privacy risks that come with Autonomous Vehicles? (3/3)

The third main issue that arises with autonomous vehicles concerns data privacy. AVs can generate up to 40 terabytes (TB) of data in an hour through the use of cameras and other mechanisms to drive independently. This data is not exclusive to one vehicle alone, instead being linked with other cars to share information through a central network. This will usually be for the purpose of ensuring a better drive — say, by avoiding certain roads with the knowledge of congestion.

However, sharing of data means large swathes of private information about users based on where their commuting habits, from health conditions to their ethnicity and, fundamentally, where they live. This isn’t reserved for passengers, either: an AV’s roving cameras and sensors could collect a treasure trove of data on pedestrians, where a visual sensor used to detect obstacles can capture a passers-by’s appearance, and an object sensor can identify their height and rough size.
