Cydonia’s Face

Cydonia is a region on Mars that has captivated both scientific and public interest. Initially identified by its distinctively colored albedo feature visible from Earth, the area is situated between the plains of Acidalia Planitia and the highlands of Arabia Terra. Notable features within Cydonia include Cydonia Mensae, characterized by flat-topped mesa-like structures, Cydonia Colles, consisting of small hills or knobs, and Cydonia Labyrinthus, a complex of intersecting valleys. The region, named after the ancient Greek city-state Kydonia, contains the famous “Face on Mars,” located between the craters Arandas and Bamberg. Positioned in the planet’s northern hemisphere, Cydonia is in a transitional zone between heavily cratered regions to the south and relatively smooth plains to the north. Some scientists speculate that the northern plains may have once been ocean beds, suggesting Cydonia might have been a coastal zone. The region is located in the Mare Acidalium quadrangle.

Learn More
