A Runner’s Guide to Cycling: Riding in a Paceline
<p>You’ve probably seen them if you’ve been running for long enough. You’re heading down a road as fast as you can. Suddenly, a bunch of cyclists in a tight group blows past you, effortlessly cruising past you and then they’re gone.</p>
<p>It’s even more demoralizing if they zoom by and you’re also riding a bike.</p>
<p>Pacelines maintain high speed with little effort because they are drafting: following very close and staying in the slipstream of the person in front of you. Today I’ll show the math behind why it works, how to do it, explain why we rarely draft while running, and discuss why drafting maybe isn’t something that we should be doing on the regular.</p>
