Even before cake bakers and web designers began refusing their services to same-sex couples, Kim Davis — “under God’s authority,” as she put it — stood in uncompromising defiance of a U.S. District Court order. Davis found herself in jail for contempt.</p>
<p>As County Clerk of Rowan County, Kentucky, in spite of the SCOTUS ruling in the Obergefell case, Davis doggedly refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.</p>
