Why Aunt Betty Was the Cool Aunt

Last Monday, I got the sad news that my Aunt Betty had passed away. She’d had some health issues in the last few years, including several strokes that rendered her wheelchair-bound. She communicated mostly through hand movements and nods. Despite her disabilities, she always had a smile on her face, a twinkle in her eye, and a desire to face each day head-on.

Aunt Betty was my mom’s younger sister. Along with two older siblings, they grew up between two world wars not far from our nation’s capital. They were preacher’s kids and their faith and family bond were strong. Through the years, annual summer family reunions made that bond a little stronger.
