101 Zen Stories: Story # 10 : The Last Poem of Hoshin — A Zen Master’s Conscious Departure
<p>The Zen master Hoshin related a story from his time in China about an elderly teacher named Tokufu. Despite his disciples’ disbelief, Tokufu correctly predicted his own passing on a snowy New Year’s Eve.</p>
<p>Hoshin told his students, “A Zen master can consciously choose when to leave this world, if he wishes.” To prove this, Hoshin declared he would pass on exactly seven days later.</p>
<p>His skeptical disciples mostly forgot Hoshin’s claim. But on the seventh day, Hoshin had a poem inscribed as his final teaching:</p>
