Nonprofit vs. Commercial Galleries: A Guide for Arts Job Seekers
<p>If you’re a recent graduate in the arts, whether that be a fine arts, museum studies, or art history degree, and you’re looking for jobs outside of academia, you’re probably looking up all sorts of galleries and museums to work in. Depending on your area, there are different kinds of galleries that may be available to you, including some nonprofit galleries and museums but also commercial galleries and auction houses. If, like most of us, you were not exposed to the commercial side of the art market during your degree, it’s not always easy to get a sense of what environment is best for you.</p>
<p>I’ve worked in both spheres, in commercial galleries, auctions, nonprofit galleries, and museums. While my experience is not entirely comprehensive, I can at least tell you about the things I wish I had known when I was looking at my first art jobs.</p>
