Cholla Cactus

<p>We heard the scream as we walked along the trail through the Cholla Garden in Joshua Tree National Park.&nbsp;Signs warned hikers about the plants. Unfortunately, the wails of pain were not uncommon. In this case, as the victim took a picture of a cholla, she backed into another one. Backing into danger is not unusual. When we lived in Nepal, we heard stories of trekkers backing up to take pictures, resulting in dire results.</p> <p>The cholla (pronounced&nbsp;<em>CHoi(y)ə</em>) cactus has a love-hate relationship with many large creatures in the deserts of Northern Mexico and the United States Southwest. The cholla cactus &ldquo;loves&rdquo; attaching itself to a large animal, hitching a ride to a new location. The animal &ldquo;hates&rdquo; when that happens.
