Cholla Cactus

We heard the scream as we walked along the trail through the Cholla Garden in Joshua Tree National Park. Signs warned hikers about the plants. Unfortunately, the wails of pain were not uncommon. In this case, as the victim took a picture of a cholla, she backed into another one. Backing into danger is not unusual. When we lived in Nepal, we heard stories of trekkers backing up to take pictures, resulting in dire results.

The cholla (pronounced CHoi(y)ə) cactus has a love-hate relationship with many large creatures in the deserts of Northern Mexico and the United States Southwest. The cholla cactus “loves” attaching itself to a large animal, hitching a ride to a new location. The animal “hates” when that happens. It is painful.
