What is the Chain Fountain, and why does it occur?

If a chain in a beaker, initially at rest, is pulled over and out of the beaker, the chain will continue to flow out of the beaker in a ”self-siphoning” action. Furthermore, the chain will also rise above the beaker’s rim, forming a ”chain fountain,” where the chain reaches a maximum height above the beaker and continues to flow, in the situation that the beaker is above the chain’s final resting point.
In this review, we examine existing explanations on the formation and mechanics of a chain fountain and analyse the possible causes and various theories posited.
