Celtics Season Opening Salary Cap Review

The Celtics are currently projecting a lower payroll and tax total, as a percentage of the salary cap, than last season when, to ownership’s credit, they were $26.5 million over the line. That was more than their total overage in all prior seasons combined. They enter this season over $18 million into the tax with 14 full roster contracts signed, though that could increase if players hit certain incentives that the team would be ecstatic to pay (like writing Jrue Holiday a check for winning the title).

It seems like this is a massively expensive team but in reality they aren’t yet. This is an undoubtedly pricey team but not a historical outlier like Knicks and Blazers teams of old or the recent vintage Warriors and Clippers. That’s because they don’t have a single player in the top-20 in 2023–24 salary. Pending those incentives, Holiday and Porzingis are 23rd and 24th in league pay.
