<p>The news broke in the now-customary way: a buzzing alert was pushed out to all of our cell phones.</p>
<p>I glanced down and saw a headline.</p>
<p>‘<em>Woman dead after crash in downtown tunnel.</em>’</p>
<p>I drew in my breath sharply. Shit. That’s terrible. Our area is littered with tunnels: if you live in Norfolk you’re hard-pressed to find a way out of town without crossing a bridge, traversing a tunnel, or both.</p>
<p>I went back to doing housework, putting aside my phone and laptop for a while. When I came back online, my blood ran cold.</p>
