Can you learn machine learning in a year?

This post is for anyone considering a career move into the field of machine learning.

Of course, the answer to the titular question is “it depends”. But what does it depend on, exactly?

Rather than try and give some generic answer to the question that suits no one in particular, I will instead attempt to describe my own experience over the past year in such a way that you can translate my world to yours and answer this question for yourself.

As with any journey, the outcome will be influenced by where you start, how fast you travel, and where you’re headed. To put this in terms of learning machine learning, we can ponder the questions:

How much do you know already?

How much time will you spend?

Which areas of ML do you want to learn?

For those in a hurry, the first few sections below (a five-minute read) will answer the above three questions from my perspective, and then I’ll tell you how far I got. I will then proceed to ramble on for quite some time about various things I found interesting along the way, that I reckon you might find interesting too.
