CAMPEONAS : Spain’s 2023 World Cup Triumph through Data Analysis

We are the champions!

Thanks to the recent triumph of Spain in the 2023 World Cup and the free distribution of Statsbomb data from this tournament I am able to write this article about the champs.

In it, I take pride in providing a brief overview of the exciting journey that the Spanish national team has undertaken. From that first match on 21/7, where we overwhelmed Costa Rica at the Sky Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, to the final against England at the Accor Stadium in Sydney a month later. The objective will be to examine our distinctive achievements, what makes this team special, and how we managed to secure the title.

It’s a fact that the Spanish national team has dominated most of the opponents it has faced, with incredibly high possession figures and a clear control of the game, consistently outplaying its rivals. Over the course of the seven matches that led us to become champions, the team beat heavily three of its opponents: a 3–0 against Costa Rica, a 5–0 against Zambia, and a 1–5 against Switzerland. This gives us a total of 18 goals scored and 7 conceded ( four of them scored by Japan).
